In compiling the biographical register of Swaziland, Huw M. Jones has provided an important standard reference work. The register casts a much wider net than a biographical dictionary as persons were not entered on the criterion of historical significance. Over 1500 entries cover a broad spectrum of individuals, black and white, male and female, who lived in or had some connection with Swaziland between the settlement of the first Dlamini ruler in the mid-eighteenth century and 1902, when the first period of Swazi independence ended. A correspondingly wide range of interests is catered for. The biographical information consolidated in this volume was gathered over a period of 30 years, from an impressive list of sources. These include government records, contemporary and modern published works, newspapers, journals and magazines, and unpublished private papers.
